Nationally there are few comprehensive
web sites to give theatre goers a bit of
variety.
This site was therefore put together to give
users something a little different.
On these pages you will find
1. Reviews of shows in Eastbourne and
elsewhere.
2. Unique pictures.
3. Galleries which have been possible only
because of the generosity of theatres and
artists.
4. Links to recommended theatrical sites
5. Useful “feeds” from other theatrical sites and
RSS sources
6. Puzzles to provide the odd moment of entertainment.
I am going to attempt to cater for all ages on the site.
Theatre should not have a reputation of being as an attraction only suitable for the elderly.
Yes many retired people enjoy and love the theatre but far too many productions are dominated by older
audiences for no explicable reason.
Some blame local demographics, others the production itself. But the truth
probably lies more in the fact that younger people have never been encouraged to go to the theatre.
I am also mystified as to why the older members of society don’t often take their younger family members along -
at least not until Panto time in December!
And there’s more to theatre than the show itself. Often the artist will be prepared to sign merchandise in the
theatre foyer and take time meeting people who have taken time to go to see them. Often they are willing to pose
for photos (not always but often).
Many theatres have “Friends” groups set up to support the future of a particular theatre.
For example The Friends Of Chichester Festival www.cft.org.uk is a massively popular group with over 8000
members.
Locally in Eastbourne there is the Friends Of The Devonshire Park Theatre (Click here for their site) which offers
many benefits including discounts on some shows and the opportunity to meet some of the performers.
In fact the Devonshire Park Theatre has been given it’s own page on this site so you can see a few more details
of this beautiful venue.
See Devonshire Park tab in the above menu.
The beautiful picture you see to the left and at the bottom of most pages is by Alan Cleaver. It features The
Rosehill Theatre in Whitehaven and its stunning interior by Oliver Messel. Clicking the image left will give
you the full image. Thanks to Alan for sharing this image with us and for
permitting its use. A couple of other images by Alan from the theatre are also
below and again these can be enlarged.
